Dhaka area profile
Is there a case for Dhaka's businesses to invest together in their streets?
This map is an area profile of two commercial districts: the Gulshan Avenue and Kemal Ataturk Avenue corridor, and Tejgaon. Explore either one on its own, or set the two side by side.
It brings open data together across six themes, so that question can be tested on evidence rather than assumption. It does not recommend a scheme.
What the map rests on
Open remote data: satellite readings of land use, heat and tree cover; open maps of streets, buildings and businesses; and published flood and air quality records. It is arranged in six themes, the same in both districts.
- Commercial economyBusiness types and sector mix, from listed places. Active frontages, vacant premises and rents are gaps.
- Built environmentLand use and how it changed from 2006 to 2017, building footprints, heights and density.
- MobilityStreet hierarchy, connectivity and the walk to the metro. Footpaths, crossings, buses, parking and traffic are gaps.
- Public realmStreet trees, green space and listed amenities. Pavement condition, lighting, public life and how safe streets feel need fieldwork.
- EnvironmentSurface heat, tree canopy, observed and projected flooding, and city air quality. Drainage and waste are gaps.
- Place managementWho maintains, owns and pays for what today is local knowledge, so this theme is mostly gaps.
- Verified An authoritative measure of the thing itself.
- Proxy estimate Modelled, or a stand-in for the thing itself.
- Missing No open data yet; the map says what would fill it.
Every indicator carries one of these three labels. In this prototype none is verified yet: that needs local records and review. What only fieldwork can tell is shown as a gap, never filled from remote data.
What it is not
- FinishedA prototype, in development. Views and figures will change.
- Settled on its boundariesBoth districts are drawn as drafts and await local review.
- A surveyFigures are modelled from imagery or counted from open listings. No street survey has been done for it.
- A recommendationIt tests whether there is a case for collective investment. It does not propose a scheme.
